TOUR N°1
From the Vatican to the Baroque Heart of Rome: among angels, popes and legendary squares
A fascinating itinerary through centuries of history, art and urban transformation, starting from the spiritual center of Christianity and leading to one of the most spectacular squares in the city. A guided journey through Imperial, Papal and Baroque Rome.
The tour begins in the majestic Piazza San Pietro, one of the most famous monumental spaces in the world. Here we will discover the historical evolution of the Vatican area: from its origins in Roman times, when imperial gardens and Nero’s circus stood here, to the grand Baroque layout commissioned by the popes.
The walk continues along the scenic Via della Conciliazione, the wide avenue connecting the Vatican to the Tiber River, where the important urban transformations of the 20th century that reshaped this part of the city will be explained.
We will then arrive in front of the impressive Castel Sant’Angelo, one of Rome’s most fascinating monuments. Originally built as the imperial mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian, over the centuries it became a fortress, a papal refuge and a prison. From here we will also enjoy the view of the evocative Ponte Sant’Angelo, famous for the statues of angels that accompany visitors toward the historic center.
The walk will continue to the monumental Palazzo di Giustizia, known by Romans as the “Palazzaccio”, before crossing the Renaissance district and reaching the spectacular Piazza Navona.
The visit will conclude here with the explanation of this extraordinary Baroque square, built on the ruins of the Stadium of Emperor Domitian, today famous for its monumental fountains and the unique atmosphere that makes it one of the most beloved places in Rome.
